How to Align Garage Door Sensors: A Homeowner’s Guide

Brought to You by Access Garage Doors
If your garage door won’t close all the way or randomly reverses when you try to shut it, the problem may be with your garage door safety sensors. Misaligned photo eyes are one of the most common issues homeowners face with their garage door systems.
At Access Garage Doors, we help families across the area restore safe, smooth garage door operation every day. In this post, we’ll walk you through how to align your garage door sensors—and when it’s time to call in a professional.
What Are Garage Door Sensors?
Garage door sensors (also known as photo-eye sensors) are safety devices located near the base of your garage door tracks. They emit an invisible infrared beam between them. If that beam is broken—or if the sensors are not aligned—your garage door opener will stop or reverse to prevent injury or damage.
Signs Your Garage Door Sensors Are Misaligned
Here are a few signs that your garage door sensors may need realignment:
- The garage door won’t close fully
- The opener lights flash but the door doesn’t move
- You have to hold the wall button to close the door
- One sensor light is off or blinking
- You hear clicking or see flashing lights on the opener unit
How to Align Garage Door Sensors Yourself
Before calling for repair service, try these steps to realign your garage door safety sensors:
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Unplug your garage door opener or turn off the breaker to avoid injury while working near electrical components.
Step 2: Check the Sensor Brackets
Both sensors should be mounted 4–6 inches above the ground on the inside of the garage door tracks. Make sure they’re tightly secured but adjustable.
Step 3: Clean the Sensor Lenses
Dirt, cobwebs, and dust can block the beam. Wipe the lenses gently with a soft cloth.
Step 4: Adjust and Align the Sensors
- Loosen the wing nuts holding the sensors in place
- Adjust them until both sensor indicator lights are solid (not blinking)
- Re-tighten the wing nuts carefully while maintaining alignment
Step 5: Test the Door
Restore power and try closing the door. If it now operates normally, the sensors were successfully aligned.
Still Not Working? Call Access Garage Doors
If your sensor lights still don’t turn solid, or if the door continues to reverse unexpectedly, the issue may be caused by:
- Damaged wires or loose connections
- Faulty sensors or mounting brackets
- A failing garage door opener logic board
Don’t guess—schedule a service call with the experts at Access Garage Doors. We’ll inspect your entire garage door system and get it back on track safely and quickly.
